Using Asterisk to troll scammers and telemarketers can be quite effective and humorous, leveraging interactive voice response (IVR) systems like the Lenny bot. I’m working on some ideas to troll scammers and telemarketers that target businesses and old folks. I need some ideas! So far, here is a list of things I could set up using Asterisk to troll scammers and telemarketers:
- Create a Complex IVR System: Develop an IVR system that includes multiple menus, submenus, and loops to confuse and frustrate callers. For example, I could make menu options that lead back to the same menu, or play long pre-recorded messages that seem like they’re leading somewhere but loop back to the start.
- Long Hold Times: Implement fake hold times with elevator music interspersed with messages like “Your call is very important to us, please stay on the line,” to keep the scammer or telemarketer waiting, hoping for a human interaction.
- Use Speech Recognition: Incorporate speech recognition to trigger specific responses based on keywords used by the caller. For example, if the caller says “offer,” the system could automatically redirect them to a long and irrelevant recorded lecture.
- Randomized Responses: Create a bank of audio files with random, nonsensical, or excessively detailed stories and responses. The system can randomly play these to the caller, mimicking a real conversation but leading nowhere.
- Endless Question Loops: Set up the system to ask for caller information (like their name, purpose of call, etc.) repeatedly, pretending as if the system did not recognize their input the previous times.
- Fake ‘Malfunctioning’ System: Design parts of the IVR to seem like it’s malfunctioning. For example, halfway through a menu, the system could suddenly “restart,” playing a startup message and leading the caller back to the initial greeting.
- Call Spoofing Recognition: If possible, integrate call spoofing recognition technology that triggers special trolling protocols when a spoofed number is detected, such as endless loops or particularly annoying recordings.
- Use Humor and Sarcasm: Incorporate humorous or sarcastic remarks subtly within the messages that might fly over the heads of scammers but be evident to an observer. This can make the interaction entertaining when you review call logs or recordings later.
