Field reference
Essential conversions, terminology, navigational checks and source references.
Azimuth calculator
Positive G-M angle: magnetic north is east of grid north. Enter example or map-specific G-M correction, not magnetic declination relative to true north.
East G-M: grid → magnetic, subtract. West G-M: grid → magnetic, add. Normalize within 0–360°. Use your actual map's dated conversion notes in the field.
Distance & pace calculator
Pace counts are personal and change with grade, surface, load, fatigue and conditions. Calibrate yours on a measured course.
Condensed navigation reference
| Concept | Rule / meaning | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Grid references | Read right (easting), then up (northing) | Equal numbers of easting and northing digits |
| 4-digit grid | 1,000 m by 1,000 m cell | Approximate 1 km cell |
| 6-digit grid | 100 m by 100 m cell | Three digits each |
| 8-digit grid | 10 m by 10 m cell | Four digits each |
| 10-digit grid | 1 m by 1 m cell | Five digits each |
| Scale 1:50,000 | 1 cm map = 500 m ground | 2 cm = 1 km |
| Contour interval | Elevation change between adjacent contours | Check marginal note, do not assume 10 m |
| Degree / mil conversion | 360° = 6,400 artillery mils (NATO convention) | 1° ≈ 17.7778 mils |
| Back azimuth | Azimuth ± 180° | Normalize to 0°–360° |
| Reciprocal direction | The reverse direction along a straight line | Not automatically a safe return route |
| G-M correction | Check map diagram and map-specific notes | Different from true/magnetic declination |
| Pace count | Paces / 100 m × distance / 100 | Recalibrate on different terrain |
Terrain feature visual atlas
Ten schematic military map-reading patterns. These original mini-diagrams are deliberately simplified: actual contour shapes vary with elevation, slope and surrounding landforms. Use contour elevations and nearby features to verify an identification.
Interactive compass trainer
Rotate a grid-direction heading and visualize a north-referenced compass dial. This is a model of angular relationships, not a magnetic sensor.
Read clockwise from the fixed grid-north mark. A real lensatic compass reports magnetic north; apply your map's current grid-magnetic notes when transferring between map and field directions.
Doctrine & authoritative resources
This site is inspired by the subjects in U.S. Army TC 3-25.26, Map Reading and Land Navigation (15 November 2013) and published geodetic reference material from NGA. It summarizes and teaches concepts rather than reproducing an official manual. Always check for updated publications and applicable unit procedures.
